The name Yakedy Yak existed as an idea long before we opened our stall at the South Melbourne Market back in 2007. Just a blink of the eye in the history of Australia’s longest running community market; even so, so much has changed in that short time. In the last year alone we’ve welcomed new neighbours, delicious gourmet chocolates on one side and a new generation of grocers on the other. All the elements that make the market so special, the mix of traditional and contemporary, the camaraderie and bustle amongst stall holders, small independent family run businesses working together in service of the local community, that’s why I love it and also exactly what we aspire to at Yakedy Yak.
Over the years our mix of products has slowly changed as we discovered new makers and suppliers. Where possible we source our products directly from small communities and family businesses both here in Australia and overseas. Everything you’ll need for your home, beautiful and original home wares including furniture, rugs, soft furnishings, kitchen essentials, home fragrance and decorative objects designed and produced using techniques employed across generations, mixing past with present to create collections complimenting today’s modern home.
Sometimes it’s just a chance encounter on an out of the way street. Ayu and his family without a word of English, relying only on a combination of sketches, hand signals and tape measures, produces the rustic furniture from recycled timber our market customers love. Kadek whose family specialises in wood carving, crafts from Albesia wood, a local fast growing and sustainable material, the magical toys and decorator items that delight shoppers young and old. Dewa produces the beautiful recycled teak boards and bowls coordinating the work of the crafts people from her village whilst another maker, Muskin, uses traditional methods passed down through generations to hand make the glossy black terracotta cookware and decorative pots. They are just some of our extended family and by working directly we can see the tangible and real difference this makes to their lives, just some of the people we consider part of our extended family.
We also carry a comprehensive range of Raine and Humble, preserving and cooking essentials from the iconic brand Agee and decorative ceramics from The Fine Cheese Co.
For the many visitors both interstate and international who tell us everyday how much they love our stall we’ve created a new marketplace. So while we’d love to have you all visit us in person now you can shop the store from afar anytime you want.
Welcome to our new home.
